There are 3 types of occupational training covered by this visa:


  1. Occupational training required for registration - Workplace-based training is required to get occupational registration, membership or licensing. The registration, membership or licensing is mandatory to work in that occupation in Australia or your home country.

  2. Occupational training to improve skills in an eligible occupation - Workplace-based structured training programs that:



  • is specifically tailored and timed to the training needs of the nominated person

  • is in relation to an occupation specified on the list of eligible skilled occupations

  • involves a nominee who has recent and suitable prior experience. This can include employment experience or study experience that:

  • is the equivalent of at least 12 months full-time experience in the occupation

  • has occurred in the 24 months immediately before the nomination is lodged



  1. Occupational training for capacity building overseas - This includes overseas qualification, government support or professionals.


Nomination is the stage where the sponsor provides details about the nominee (intended trainee), the purpose or type of training and how and where the training will be provided.


Eligibility Criteria:


  1. Have a Nomination/Sponsorship - You must be nominated (if the sponsor is a temporary activities sponsor) or invited (if the sponsor is a Commonwealth Government agency). 

  2. Be Sponsored - You must have an approved sponsor who will support your application. Your sponsor must provide a training plan relevant to your occupation or field of study.

  3. Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) Requirement - You must genuinely intend to stay in Australia temporarily for the purpose of occupational training.

  4. Relevant Occupational Training - You must be undertaking one of the following:



  • Training required for registration/licensing (for example, to meet registration requirements in Australia or your home country).

  • Training to improve skills in an eligible occupation.

  • Professional development training (only available for overseas employers to send staff for professional development in Australia).



  1. Age - Generally, you should be 18 years old or older at the time of decision of your application.

  2. English Language Requirement - You must have at least functional English, unless you’re exempt (e.g. passport from certain English-speaking countries).

  3. Health and Character Requirements - You must meet health and character standards, including police checks and possibly medical exams.

  4. Health Insurance - You must maintain adequate health insurance for the duration of your stay.

  5. Financial Capacity - You must have enough money to support yourself (and any family members) during your stay in Australia.

  6. No Previous Visa Condition Breaches - You should not have a history of visa cancellations or breaching visa conditions.


Cost of the applicationThe application to lodge the subclass 407 visa for main applicant is $430 as of July 2025.
