The Skills in Demand Visa replaced the TSS (Temporary Skill Shortage) visa, offering a more streamlined pathway for workers in high-demand occupations.
To qualify for the subclass 482, you’ll generally need to:
Be nominated to work in an occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL)
Have at least 1 year of full-time or full-time equivalent post qualification work experience
Have Relevant formal qualifications
Have this level of English capability and standard health and character checks
e paid the Annual Market Salary Rate (AMSR) for the occupation and no less than the Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT) or Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT).
Have a relevant skills assessment if this is required for your occupation
With this visa, generally you can:
work in Australia for your sponsor for up to 4 years, or up to 5 years if you are a Hong Kong passport holder
study (you won’t receive government assistance)
travel to and from Australia as many times as you want while the visa is valid
If eligible, apply for permanent residence.
Note: From 1 July 2025, skilled visa income thresholds were set to be increased by 4.6%. This is in line with changes to the annual Average Weekly Ordinary Time Earnings (AWOTE). This was delivered on the commitment outlined in the Migration Strategy, as recommended by the Migration Review.
From 1 July 2025, indexation changes whereas follows:
The Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT) increased from AUD73,150 to AUD76,515. This impacts nomination applications for the Core Skills stream of the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) and the Employer Nomination Scheme visa (subclass 186).
The Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT) increased from AUD135,000 to AUD141,210. This impacts nomination applications for the Specialist Skills stream of the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482).
The Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) used for the Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional visa (subclass 494) and the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) (subclass 187) increased from AUD73,150 to AUD76,515. This is in line with the CSIT and subject to approval of relevant legislation.
This means new nomination applications from 1 July 2025 must meet the new relevant income threshold or the annual market salary rate, whichever is higher.
This change will not apply to existing visa holders and nominations lodged before 1 July 2025.
Processing time: The processing time for Subclass 482 (Core skill stream) visa is generally within 57 days to 4 months as of July 2025. The Department updates the processing timeframes regularly and without announcement, so please check the website regularly.
