Australia has launched the National Innovation Visa (Subclass 858) which is a permanent residency pathway aimed at attracting individuals with internationally recognised, exceptional talent across sectors such as academia, entrepreneurship, investments, the arts, sports, and innovation. Should you plan to move to Australia directly with permanent residency this is definitely one of the best options you can choose!
Why is it different from other visa options?
Direct Permanent Residency: Unlike many visas with temporary stages, the Subclass 858 grants immediate permanent residency.
Invitation-Only Process: Applicants must first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI); only those invited by the Department of Home Affairs can lodge a full visa application.
International Recognition Required: Applicants must have a proven, internationally recognised record of outstanding achievement in one of the eligible fields.
Who Can Apply - The visa is tailored for established or emerging leaders who have achieved excellence in areas such as:
Global researchers and academics
Entrepreneurs with innovative ventures
Innovative investors
Creative talents and athletes
The application process to apply subclass 858 is:
1. Expression of Interest (EOI)
Start by submitting an EOI via the National Innovation visa form. This is not an application but a way to express your intent and showcase your achievements. EOI remains valid for 2 years from submission.
2. Invitation to Apply
If you're selected, you'll receive an invitation via email containing an invitation code and reference. You then have 60 days to submit your visa application through ImmiAccount.

3. Visa Application
Your application must include:
Completed Form 1000, a nomination attesting your remarkable achievements, signed by a qualified Australian nominator (citizen, permanent resident, eligible NZ citizen, or reputable organisation)
Supporting documentation: proof of identity, CV, qualifications, English proficiency, health and character checks, and evidence of your exceptional achievements
Priority Pathways & State Nominations
Applications are processed according to the Department’s priority categories:
Priority One: Global experts with top-tier international awards.
Priority Two: Those nominated by an approved Australian Commonwealth, State, or Territory government agency via Form 1000.
Priority Three & Four: Exceptional achievers in specified Tier 1 and Tier 2 sectors (e.g., health, renewables, agri-tech, fintech).
Why Consider Subclass 858?
Permanent Residency from Day One – No temporary stages.
Special Processing Pathways – State/territory nominations can accelerate assessment.
Broader Eligibility – Fields include not just academics and entrepreneurs, but athletes and creatives too.
Long EOI Validity – You have 2 years to await invitation, offering flexibility.
